I'm not kidding you! This morning our little old english game bantam crowed!

She did it several times and woke me up. I then woke my husband up because I needed proof. Sure enough...err,err,errrrrrr. Yes, we KNOW she's a hen because she's the only bantam we have, and she lays bantam eggs!!!!

What's funny about this is she's been acting kind of broody. All the birds were out yesterday and she was in the coop sitting on a buff orp egg. She was tucking the egg under her like she wanted to be a mommy! She got mad at my daughter when she went in and took the egg. Poor girl. Then she came out and was making all kinds of interesting cooing sort of noises. We do have new chicks so...not sure if that's sparing something on or not.

Anyone else had this happen before?

p.s. She's the most lovable and affectionate bird that we have! We can't have roos so I hope our neighbors don't complain. That will be a hard one to explain!

Yes Hens can crow occasionally. It's usually when there is no rooster. One hen will take on the role. I have a 4 yo GLW that on a rare day will crow. Kinda funny- doesn't sound quite right.

Well, it would make sense in that we don't have any roosters! She's so confused.

I actually don't think it is a bad thing. She's being a good alpha hen. Warning her coop mates about perceived danger.

We have a "hormonal" chicken as well! We didn't have a roo, so she took up the job. They are actually called roosterhens. lol Yup they've named them. ha ha

Our girl even got a huge comb and wattles like a roo. Then we got a roo, and she did the waltz with him for dominance over the flock. No clue who won, because we have a grown roo now and he's in charge.
