Our introduction to keeping chickens, the high's, the lows and pics of our journey.

Tonight was lock down. Going into lock down with only 5, yes, 5, eggs. 3 have for sure chicks, with the new light I got, I could actually see a baby marans moving! That was cool. 7 eggs had NOTHING! All 11 marans eggs came from the same hen. 2 had definite life, 2 were a bit iffy. Think they may have quit, but the eggs are weirdly oblong oval shaped, so, maybe its just that. They do not stink so I left them. The other egg is from my amber link, and that one is growing. So, looking at 3 chicks. Strutted is not performing and both marans hens have quit laying for the season... Dang it all. Well, I hope they are girls. So very disappointing. I can't believe only 4 eggs out of the 11 we fertile...

No I have left it out for now, I have my tray swap and quarter turn system down pat. I will put it back in for the next one. I have my eye on some lovely Coronation Sussex. Yes, 'bator brain in full swing.

Those coronation are gorgeous birds. Have you seen the jubilee orpington? Olive hill said you could take a speckled Sussex over a mottled orp, cull hard, and after a few gens, get the jubillees. Not that brave yet, and they are so expensive!

I pinched these pictures from a lovely lady in Tassie, a member here called Fancychooklady. She may supply us with some eggs in the near future. I am a fool for not taking her up earlier, but live and learn.

These are her birds, and a hat tip has to go to her great photography. Lisa had posted more, but I like these two.

I was left unattended today.....and got to collect all the eggs! Found an extra one that one of the Silver Penciled Wynadottes has laid, which got me kind of thinking "I can take a better photo than just an egg carton"

Kind of got a bit carried away.

Someone may be a little egg OCD...

I am afraid you have a very bad case of bator brain. The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem. Repeat after me. My name is Ben and I am addicted to chickens and all things chicken related.
Who am I kidding. The people without bator brain are the ones with the problem lol. We are the normal ones (I keep telling myself)

Never a more true word spoken! I find solace in not being alone, I am but one man in a crowd of addicts.

This afternoon I began a little project of making mini PVC chick feeders. I needed a second one since we will probably have to use two brooders at some point.

I have not snapped any shots of it yet, real simple though. A piece of 50mm (2") PVC with two end caps. I screwed a piece of wood to the end caps to make them flat bottomed, then drilled a few holes along it. Fill from the top and rotate the holes upward to suit the height of the chicks.

Will be clearer when I get it done if that does not make sense.
