Our introduction to keeping chickens, the high's, the lows and pics of our journey.

Yes the hungry little beggars come running when they see the " finger ". Blue laced red hatching today. Put 2 in with the coro chicks last night. The coro's were delighted with their new play toys. More pics to come. We're having a minor flood crisis ATM. This is " Blu "

Hahaha, he is a good looking fellow! Hmmmmm, I think I am well and truly maxed out at the moment, and we have 12 more coming in a couple of weeks. I have stopped breed shopping for this year (where have I heard that before? hahahaha)

Twice last night I was certain to hear a peep from an egg, Alicia didn't hear it, so apparently I am imagining it.

Day 19 AM, lots of wiggles, no pips yet.

The big girls have been averaging 7 eggs a day from the 9 girls. It seems our Wyandottes are not producing. One laid a couple, then we had some soft eggs under the roost and that was it for about a week or so now. The other girl I am yet to see show an interest in the nest boxes. They are coming up to 28 weeks so I would think it won't be too far off normal production for them.

We have also had some nice spring days here, so the lawn has gone into hyper drive right before Alicia's mum is due to come stay, the chooks will get a lawn clippings treat in the next couple of days....getting back outside will give the incubator window a break from my nose.

Spring... So. Far. Away...

An evil Michigander posted on FB the forecast for our area... Looks like a possible bit of snow next weekend. Good thing I live in Michigan, and the weather WILL change before that. LOL

One of the MOD's at work just got chickens this year! YAY!, Something in common to talk about at work, to fill those awkward, what do I say now moments! LOL

I think I need a heat pad. I was putting trees together today. I do think that I just might be OUT of the Christmas Spirit before we hit December. Nothing like stocking Christmas paraphenalia already. WHAT?? BUt we haven't even had Halloween!

Yesterday, I don't know what happened, but I didn't collect eggs. Today I collected, and had nearly 3 dozen. IF I do that again, I am going to need to remember to get a bigger egg bucket. I also started getting a purpley/rosey tinted egg. I tried to get a pic of it, but the camera doesnt' do the egg justice. Going to have to put it next to a regular brown egg, and a tinted egg, maybe then it'll show up on the color... It's cool though.

Funny you should mention that egg colour Nova (sorry if Em is still waiting for her first one)

Last night one of the boys left both nest box doors open, the girls were busting for privacy when I went down for my morning rounds. Luna (BA), Curly (BV) and Sunny (LS) were all in there like rats up a drain pipe to have their morning rituals. I think the wait must have stressed them, Curly's was speckled, Sunny's was smaller and Luna's was quite purple. Eggs are so hard to get good pics of.

The other girls have not been in such a rush.

On the topic of eggs, we have had a real hard time getting the faithful hard boiled egg down pat. I know, something so simple yet since we have been getting our won fresh eggs we just have not hit it right, always end up with such a messy job, or just a yolk. I have been on the hunt for 'the way' and read and tried a few different things and none seemed perfect.

The other day I joined two methods together and BOOM four perfect peeled hard boiled eggs, straight from the fridge and only a day old.

I brought a pot of salted water up to a boil, then lowed the eggs in gently on a spoon set timer for 14 minutes (yeah...I know, I have always only cooked them for 8-9!) Timer goes off, remove from heat and run the pot under cool running water, when the eggs were cool, enough to handle, I gave them a little tap on the side, just enough to put a little crack in it. Then left in the pot of cool water (no ice) for a couple of minutes while I got my sandwich stuff ready, then just peeled away. All of them came apart perfectly, bright yolks, no discolouration, just nice smooth eggs!

Finally, for new news since early this morning....we have our first tiny pip, a little Ara egg, wonder if that was the one that peeped at me, Alicia has now conceeded that I am not completely crazy and I may have just heard what I claim to have heard hahahaha

The slow boat of lock down is well underway.

Proof of not being COMPLETELY crazy. Alicia was un-nerving me with the look I got when I said I could hear peeping......was half expecting to have to fight off men in white coats this morning.
