Our introduction to keeping chickens, the high's, the lows and pics of our journey.

I love the car Ben.

In California diesel is more costly than petrol.

Our Mitsubishi in the Philippines is a diesel.

Diesel is about 25% cheaper than petrol over there. About $1.10 per litre
I like the torque on low rev's in diesels too, plus they give better mileage usually. Here diesel is about 1.55€ per litre versus 1.70€ for gas. Although you do have to pay a annual tax for cars that don't run on gas (including electric cars!), which for our Nissan comes to about 400€. It's calculated on a CO2 emission basis, as is taxation for new cars.

Your chicks have some pretty feathering growing Ben! It's also interesting to see which hens others find lay really well & which don't.
I was wondering how long you let your hens free range for? We have only been free ranging for a couple of weeks now & one pullet in particular makes herself hoarse complaining if they are not let out early enough to suit her, but I kind of like having a lawn.
I was also wondering what your pooper scooper looks like or how you keep the sand clean & dry in the run? I tried sand & it was a disaster, but I still like the idea for summer for when it gets really hot.

And - I'm finally sure that all our pullets are laying because I found five eggs before 9:30am this morning!

From left to right they are from the two long lays, the ISA Brown (our biggest yet at 55g) and the two Austrolorps. The one on the far left is the only one I've had to wash so far because I found it near the feed bowl covered in mud. I've seen Hedwig in the nest box but wasn't sure she was laying so that might have been her first & taken her by surprise.

We don't pay a CO2 tax, just vehicle registration and compulsory third party insurance. Diesel here is more exspensive than petrol (go figure?!) About AU$1.59 for diesel, vs $1.49 for petrol. Prices can vary pretty widely.

Thanks for the flock update! I was wondering how Baby was getting along:)
Yeah she is doing well, so is Laverne not pictured. Just not a 'soft loving friendly' type of chicken, more of a 'I might give you more eggs if you keep the treats coming' type of chicken. She holds the power lol

We let all teh flock out at about 4:30pm, and just leave the two gates open. I too like my lawn and gardens, so we restrict the time to limit the massive holes, where the eggs are laid and how much mess they can make at the back door. I swear they like to sit on the door mat and watch the kids cartoons through the sliding door!

Yeah, I am still using sand. Been thinking about trying out Fancy's straw idea, but I don't have a place to turn the pile of hay yet so I have been holding off. I just use plain white play sand from Bunnings for about $7.75 a bag (they put the price up!) The way the cubby coop is set up we just close some of the windows if it is raining hard, but the ones under the patio stay dry so we always have some air flow.

Our pooper scooper is a very technical 3l milk jug cut down into a scooper with holes drilled in the bottom so it's a sort of sift. I used to use a kitty litter one but it was too small and too slow. I think a plastic kids play shovel with similar holes drilled in it would work well. I really only sift it to try keep the cost of buying the sand down. If you have tons of sand and are just using stuff from your property just scoop if out and chuck the lot (even if it has some sand with it) and top up the sand more often.

If you can pile the straw it sounds like a good way to go to me as long as the flock are used to laying in the nest box.

As an afterthought, I did see a pretty cool design a while ago where someone had used rain gutters under their roosts to catch the droppings, then they just scrapped the gutters out into a bucket. I will see if I can find a link or pic for you.

I will have another go at finding some better pics.

My worry with the design is the birds just perching on the edge of teh gutter, but according to what I was reading thats not a problem.

I'll be back!
