Our introduction to keeping chickens, the high's, the lows and pics of our journey.

Apparently the Avon stuff works as a bug repellent pretty nicely, there was just a discussion about it in Oz's thread.

Lol, that s not a very good endorsement for Avon. I use Vicks , the main thing with scaley leg mite , when using anything other than insecticide is that you are attempting to smother the mites. What ever you choose to use needs to stay put , if it is too runny then it won't be very effective. I like the Vicks because it stays put like Vaseline and the menthol content would burn the little critters out. I usually only have to apply it once , maybe twice.

The vetramil looks to be a good product , if it's not too pricey it would be worth a go.
A little goes a long way, and it keeps pretty well, even in a opened container. I suggest keeping a 10g tube in your first aid kit. I think it costs around 10 euros here, but it's well worth it. It's not approved for human use, but I've used it on myself. And last summer my dad burned his hand pretty badly (burned the whole side of his index finger), we got the wound to go down to half it's size in a couple of days with that. It was completely healed in a bit over a week.

My hubby works in the hyperbaric with some great wound care specialists and we have been lucky to have some great products made available to us to use on horse wounds. Medi honey is a great product but frightfully expensive.

Morning!

Thanks for the advice. We won't be going for anything expensive lol. I might grab a tub of vicks next time I am at the shop. She did not like to be caught for the pic so I think I will use the 'sneak in after bedtime' trick.

Big hiya back Nova, we missed you.

Seems like peak hour down in 'Nestbox-ville' this morning. I went to clean under the roosts and Summer was in a box, I turn around and the Maran is climbing in. I empty the scoop and Baby the Araucana is climbing into another nest. I am just about finished cleaning and one of the Rock sisters comes warbling in with her weird honking eggs song.

If this keeps up we could have a new record today!

Ben, do you know just how much I would like to hear this warbling, weird and, honking egg song?

Mine make such a ruckus that I often find myself heading over to the pens just to check on everyone. Ben if you go to woolies or Coles they have a generic chest rub for half the price, works just as well.
The truck has arrived, I think we need a bigger turning circle.
