Our introduction to keeping chickens, the high's, the lows and pics of our journey.

Dang Wright! I think that's more than I wanna do! LOL, I just use 3 thermometers. Left, right and center.

I have to candle again. xing fingers that I see a bit more than I did last time, blob wise. I know, blob sounds so callous. BUT ITS SO HARD TO SEE THROUGH THEM DANG DARK SHELLS!

Lol - I know - I'm a true incubation geek. It's because I'm trying to get the DIY tomato sauce bator to work perfectly. Hahaha.
Those marans shells and some of the ee shells too can be difficult. My black tailed buff marans - I wasn't sure anything was in there until it hatched - a rooster of course since I had only one egg of that type. I sooooo wish I was incubating with you guys! Tempted last night to haul out the incubator. I got home from work and my husband let me know we lost our Rhode Island buff (RIR/BO) hen to another raccoon. It climbed over our 6ft fence enclosure. :( makes me mad. She was my first layer from the April hatch too - egg every day since, including the one she left me in the nest yesterday. So tempting to keep that egg warm, but I'd have to hatch a few of hers from the fridge...and of course a few more...

...and if you're going to run it , may as well be full!!!! :)

I had given thought to the heat difference. Using the tray also gives two different heights, so each turn I move the back tray to the front and slide everyone down a slot.

I don't have enough thermometers (that I trust to be the same) to use more than the two I have in there now. I will just have to be a bit patient and see if the "hmmmm's" get a seat upgrade or downgrade.

After the clears are removed I might have the space to go back to the tray and get all the eggs back down to the same height.

Alicia just walked in the door with a new LED torch, hope that makes the next candle a little more definitive!

Ya-Gota Love a helpmate who thinks like that!!

Mine do that when they're hot - has it been suddenly warmer than usual where you are? Or if they've been eating more corn? Some breeds seem to run hot more easily - my marans have their wings out when all the others are fine.

It is actually a pretty cool day. There are 4or5 of my comets doing it. But as soon as I walk toward them they straighten up and scamper off. Even the couple that are usually no problem to catch. I just want sure if it was something I needed to worry about.
