Our introduction to keeping chickens, the high's, the lows and pics of our journey.

She was from a Blue x Splash mating. This is her grown up. I personally prefer blues from black x blue matings. Here are some blues and blacks from the latest black x blue mating. There are 4 blues and 5 blacks in this pic. These chicks are now 8 weeks old. The two blue pullets are the perfect shade of blue IMO and they already have crisp lacing against a recognisably lighter ground colour. I really need to get some pics. They will be in the breeding pen next year with another 2 black pullets from this batch.
I love the colour of that hen. I'm trying vey hard to resist the temptation of adding yet another breed to my already expanding flock. I also like blue orps.

Oh... Bad news. What ever was ailing Fritz after his night out in the cold winds, has finally claimed him... Was hoping with antibiotics and drench, being in the warm garage... But his comb turned purple, face and wattles pale, and he fall on his back and not be able to get up... So, heart failure is my best guess. His eyes were clear, no discharge from the nose, no sneezing or wheezing... Was eating and drinking, poop look normal, so... Suckage for sure...

Today the Frankenbrooder got some new residents. First night the chicks are outside (under the eves of our patio) They have heat during the nights, but day's have been warm enough to have the lamp off.

The seemed very happy after the move, we started out with their feeders, but once they were settled changed to hanging feeder and water.

Was funny to sit back and easily watch them from above. The little roo's bouncing about chest bumping already.

and guess who is the family favourite...particularly Alicia's. Yep, that's the little SAlmon Fav hahahaha. Very friendly little chick.

One of those panoramic shots of the brooder once the hanging parts went in. I will remove the smaller feeders in a day or so.

I took the branch out as it took up valuable 'huddle space' once the sun went down.

Moving onto other news, the 7 Coronation Sussex eggs in the DIY 'Bator are ticking away nicely, due on the 21st of this month. We all huddled around it tonight for a sneak peek candle. The boys have always missed out so they got to see the very beginnings tongiht. As this early stage, five look like they have made a start, fingers crossed we can get a trio!

Finally, something a bit different. Today's parkrun (for the newer readers our family is partial to a weekly 5km community trot) was themed spooky run. Was a blast this morning with some pretty funny costumes, and lots of sweat.

I honestly don't know how people do any form of sport with long air and beards lol

Hahaha- be glad you didn't have a peg leg!!!
I just knew that little faverolles girl would be a favorite! Now that you have one, it'll be hard to not have at least one in your flock. As she gets older don't be surprised if she is a loner and comes running for attention anytime a human is near. Both my sf girls have been that way - probably because I've only had one female faverolles at a time. Mine prefer humans to chickens. Eventually I'll have several of them at once, maybe they'll rule the rest of the flock then like Nova's have :)
