Our introduction to keeping chickens, the high's, the lows and pics of our journey.

Yep, I was right lol

Seems our little flock is somewhat 'crazy' too. We seem to have a few gender issues lol

All started back when Smudge the rooster decided he liked to sing his own egg song. More recently, Luna the pullet mounted one of the SPW....who happily squatted for the event.

Then today, blow me down, ROsie the RIR pullet thinks it might be a good idea to have a go at crowing! She did it twice, then I got my phone out and filmed her do it two more times. Once I took it away she had another couple of attempts.

They must have seem me attempt the rooster dance and that's threw everyone off what they are 'supposed' to do. "If it's ok for him to be unusual, it's ok for me!" Hahahaha

I am an open and accepting minded person, I don't care which people like what ever gender, but I have to say this behaviour from my girls is something I am not accustomed to! I will get my connection cord out and upload that video later tonight.

Hope you all have had a good weekend.

I was down there hosing off the run (was hot here today, about 37C (98F) and I like to go cool the run down with a hose down. I didn't get there until about 4pm when I let them out for their afternoon range. They all came back in to have a splash in the puddles (and mud) and that's when Rosie decided to speak up.

I am just uploading that short video now, I think it's pretty funny to see.

Also, tomorrow is Remembrance Day for us, so will be observing a minute's silence at 11am. If you see a vet selling a poppy, splash out. :D

Lest We Forget.

thank you Ben for your service

I am glad you made it home. I am glad your family has an amazing father

the world is a better place because of the sacrifices of the fallen and will continue to get better because of people like you

lest we forget

Monday is Veteran's Day here - likely our version of Remembrance Day. Thank you Ben and all the other's who have kept us safe:)

I will have to watch the video at work - for some reason my phone has trouble viewing. Never seen a hen crow but I've definitely heard of it. Lol. Mixed up group you've got there!

Mixed up ! Wait till the Tasmanians hatch. Our visitors are all on their way today. Been a busy week. Hubby had submarine visit , they had a dive on it Saturday , yesterday , one day event ended up with one our girls in the ambulance. Then I got home and found 14 new chicks on the garden. Thank god it's Monday.
:barnie. Got egg orders coming out my ears. Once the kids are at school, I'll answer all the emails. Then I'll have a coffee with my chooks.

YEp, thats the one, also known as Armistice Day in some places/times. Thanks for the thought, but it's the old boy's who had it tough, and gave the most.

Those Tasmanian eggs are already some of the weirdest I have had lol. The big trip must have knocked them about a bit. One had a perfect heart shaped air cell. I think we may have lost the detached air cell one a couple of days ago, leaving it in there a bit longer to make sure. If it is gone we are down to 4 that are pressing on.

Sorry to hear about your daughter, seems everyones kids are in the wars at the moment, emergency departments everywhere must be running low on the glue by now.

Congrats to the new mum too, 14 little ones is a nice score :)

Bugger! We will have to try again. Not having much luck ATM. My daughter had exams today, but instead is in the X-ray department . Horse slid into the jump wing, sending her face first into the metal wing. Split eye, black swollen cheek. :th

400

Tried to post this a few days ago, but the phone wouldn't cooperate. Of course, now, there is powdered sugar on the ground, even though this pic is less than a week old.

I am proud, though. Mama is doing really well. Fun watching her go nuts on any of the roos who try to even eat from the same pile.

Naaaaw! They look like walking leaves!

Cool, very cool. Our Rosie seems to have gone off the idea of being a mum, a shame as I was hoping to slide a couple eggs under her, but now Mr 'Bator is doing the job.

They are due on the 21st, so lock down is not far off for us. Have to set the hatcher up soon I guess!

As for the other little ones, I am still up in the air a bit. I think of the 4 Wellies we may actually have 2-3 females which is great news, have not got clear dark chest feathers, but the one that started to grow wattles, has a bigger comb that is a different shade to the other three, it is also lagging behind in back feathers. Fingers crossed for 3/4 girls.

I think there are more girls in there, 11-14 of the 27 I think, but that is just guessing based of who is advanced in feathering and who is not. I have not had a chance to get some more pics, but I am home tomorrow with them so I will get some more breed shots and let them have a run on the lawn for a bit.
