Our introduction to keeping chickens, the high's, the lows and pics of our journey.

Today's project was re-potting our biggest tomato plants, and building some supports for them. Also, our feeder has been pretty much worthless so I threw together this, borrowing a bit from an idea here on BYC.

Took about 3 minutes for the chickens to get used to it. No waste feeder with a compost bucket and a storm vent, cost was a bit under 10 euros.
Nice, very nice looking! Is it cut into your fence or mounted up against it?

Up against for now, but I'm going to put it inside, the one in there is worthless. I built it without any experience of chickens, so it's just a slit cut into a water container, half of the feed is spread into the bedding. This one should not have the same problem.

We put it inside the coop last night after the chickens went to bed, and at least there was not a horrid mess in there, so it seems to be working. I'm not sure how much the level of feed in it has sunk, but maybe they are using it. They have been getting quite a lot of treats in the past few days so maybe they've cut down on the feed a bit. Loads of watermelon and two large fish carcasses, one raw and one cooked. The cooked one was favored.

Veera paused her egg production yesterday, but today she had laid a 31g egg. The other's are still keeping us waiting.

The Sussexes are looking like wet rags at the moment. The others are slightly better adapted for Finnish summers, it's been raining cats and dogs all day so the flock has mainly stayed in the run even though the door has been open.

Our berry bushes have been under attack by some birds, almost half of all berries are gone. We had to put up an atrocious net on top of them.

The chickens have also discovered our salads and cabbages, so we had to fashion some protection for them too.

Made a skeleton out of electric tubing and suspended some gardening gauze over it. If this rain doesn't stop soon, our onions are going to rot.

Nice work, I made a similar feeder but made a mistake with the elbow height and never fixed it.

I have had a mega weekend, flat out both days with my baby brothers wedding and two very long training sessions.

No new egg from our new layer as of yet, but there is always tomorrow.

Don't worry Ben, I've been entertaining your audience (much to their dismay, I presume

Yeah sorry, been slack on the photo front. I have been dragging my heels with all the car yard bizo.

Cat went to the Haven on Saturday morning, in the tiny time slot between race and wedding rehearsals lol.

I did find a pink tinged egg this evening on the lawn outside the Cubby coop, my guess is it was the other Rock sister or the same one that forgot how to use a nest.

The silkie chick is winning the feather race and the Blue AUstralorp seems to be loosing, funny as I have seen them both run around together all feisty.

I will try get a few of the five wonder chicks tomorrow.

We are waiting at the edges of our seats. Did you find your dream car already?
