(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

We consider ourselves to still be newbies, but in reality, it's been about 18 months now. Our first set of three ladies did not do well because we allowed them to free range all day. Our new flock is much better supervised and are doing very well.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

Currently, we have 65 ladies and 5 gentlemen of various species and ages.

Almost forgot to include our 5 ducks!

(3) What breeds do you have?

Americauna - 22 hens
White Leghorn - 13 hens, 5 roosters
Rhode Island Red - 8 hens
Easter Eggers - 7 hens
Brown Sussex - 6 hens
White Laced Wyandotte - 2 hens (rescue animal)
Brown Leghorn - 2 hens (rescue animal)
Unknown - 5 hens

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

  • Learning the personalities of each bird.
  • The interactions between the birds as well as how they interact with our other animals. These other animals include several cats, two Great Pyrenees (livestock protection animals), two Yorkies (think they are livestock protection animals! :) )
  • Building/modifying the coop and find new ways to deal with the issues that come up pretty much every day.
  • So much more that we can't think of right now.
(5) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

We have five wonderful children with only one left at home. He's just about ready to leave for college so it will be an empty nest, wait with 70 chickens it won't be!

(6) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

We have been reading the various posts for quite some time. We found the site via our many, many, many google searches and found the information here to be some of the best on the net. Very informative and the discussions are always friendly and helpful. We joined because we wanted to become participants and not just passive readers.
 
We are completing the necessary paperwork to sell the eggs at the local farmer's market starting this spring.

Currently, we are only getting 4-7 eggs due to the age of the flock and the short days. Most of our girls will mature over the next 3 months. All but 8 of them we have raised from day old chicks. It really is rewarding and so easy to get more than you probably should have. LOL

We live in SW Missouri 'out in the country.' We purchased a small (5 acre) hobby farm that sits in the middle of a 400-acre farm. A local rancher purchased the farm with the farmhouse, not needing the house he sold it to us with enough land that we could raise some chickens and a few other critters. We get the benefits of a living on a large farm without the hassle of having to work the enterprise. Works very well for us and our family.
 
Sounds like you have your hands full -- and a great set-up! Land, a farmhouse, chickens, ducks, dogs, cats and all the best stuff that comes with living in the country. Do you do some gardening, too?

While you have two Yorkies who think they are livestock guardians, I have one Great Pyr who has no interest in the job; she is a guardian failure/oversized house pet. You are sooo lucky.
