Our kitchen remodel! Tile floor is finished (pic pg 4)!!!

We tiled our bathroom. I think that you absolutely have to have a backer board. I hope that construction person checks back in but I really don't think you can tile directly on concrete. Think temp differentials, give, and IMPOSSIBLE to remove if you (or anyone else) ever wanted to redo. Don't be the one the next homeowner is banging their head about! But really good demo job! Can't wait to see it progress!

Thanks! I actually went ahead and did some research on that and I found a ton of websites saying that tiling directly on a concrete slab shouldn't give you any problems as long as the slab is cured (at least 28 days) and it wasn't ever sealed (no problem there either). So if the tile ever comes in, we'll go ahead and start tiling soon! I'm already anxious to get my dining room table back where it belongs and my refrigerator and my cabinets and washer and dryer and...

I'm glad you checked it out. I'm glad it works! That will be much easier, that backerboard was a #^$&#!

no backer board needed on cement slab unless there are cracks in the slab... the only thing I would suggest considering is etching the floor (acid wash) to remove any glue residue and to open the pores of the cement... and use a mortar that has adhesive in it to help secure it to the cement.

Great advice, thanks! We have already sealed all cracks, but I like the idea of an acid wash. We're going to get our mortar tomorrow to tile this weekend, so we'll look for one with an adhesive in it.

Tile is going in!! We spent all of yesterday doing final prep work and marking our lines. By evening, we had spent about 2 hours putting in the tile - this is what we have so far! (And yes, we ARE going to repaint our cabinets, too!)

Looking great! When you're done I'll tell you the story of our bathroom tiling project. We did those little octaganol tiles if that gives you any clues. We are still married surprisingly. You probably won't do this but make sure the stuff under the tiles (can't remember what that is called) isn't too thick. Ours was in places and at about 4 in the morning I decided I didn't care anymore. MISTAKE> When we tried to grout (with BLACK!!!) the morter or whatever was poking through. So we had to go back and chip it all out. My husband is not so patient and he chipped a few tiles. ACKK> Anyway, just don't make it too thick and you'll be fine! I think it was worse with all those itty bitty tiles.

Good luck! I'm sure yours will go a lot smoother. We had never done it before. And never will again by the way.
