Ten days into raising six little chicks. We live in central NC and are happily retired. How did we suddenly become chicken farmers? Our granddaughter is a senior at NCSU majoring in Food Science Engineering and Biomanufacturing. She is constantly sharing "you should think about" and "did you know" information. So we researched backyard chickens, eggs, and how to videos. These little girls are so entertaining, they are all named after aunts, Pretty Pearl and Elegant Elgie are ISA Browns; Naughty Nancy and Big Bertha are Gold Lace Wyandotte; Happy Hazel and Miss Mozelle are Rhode Island Reds. As first timers it is a definite learning curve, very thankful to have found this group and all the knowledge shared here! Our Facebook friends are still laughing at us and shaking heads. I weighed the girls on Sunday to see how much they have gained... so far the average gain the first week was 1.75 ounces. I am also journaling the experience with photos because of lots of free time. Here is a photo of Elegant Elgie at 5 days old.

Welcome! It sounds like your granddaughter talked you into a great decision!
Unlike your Facebook friends who have not yet experienced the addictive powers of chickens, you will find the BYC community fully understands, embraces, and appreciates any updates you provide (especially updates with pictures)!
