Our School's Poor FFA Project Chickens

So the drama continues... here's what one of the ag teachers said in a text:

"Just went through some drama with admin letting us know that there have been reports of the chickens being neglected, injured, fighting. This was weird to us since I know [a colleague] has been going out there regularly to care for them. We went out yesterday to check and they had food, water, no fighting, no injured birds, they were all calm and happy. Nothing was wrong. Some people just dont understand #chickenfarmlife... 🙄"

She clearly doesn't realize it was me who complained. Did I overreact? Y'all saw the pictures. I don't think that's normal or ok. But my chickens are spoiled pets, not farm/livestock birds. Is that "chicken farm life?"
Definitely not!! They clearly WERE NOT being cared for!!! And the only reason they had water yesterday was cause YOU did it!!!!

All I can say I would like to put her out in over 100 degree weather with no water and an infected foot and see how cared for she feels! :smack

Some people just don’t get it. You are amazing for helping those poor little animals!

You had a picture of an empty waterer, that appeared to be either a 3 gallon or 5 gallon waterer. There were 12-14 chickens there, correct? No way 12-14 chickens drank that much water in a day. Either it wasn't being filled daily or it wasn't properly set on level ground. That's just for starters, and that is VERY basic #chickenfarmlife. Livestock cannot survive without water.

My friend who agreed to help me round them up said the same. The waterer was nearly empty and filthy. She said dirty chickens on bare ground is pretty much par for the course for many farm chickens. And the feed of wheat and corn isn't healthy. I didn't mean to create drama, but basic care is just that - basic. That's easy to do. No excuse.

They will free range now on a 7-acre farm. They will be living the high life!

And I realize that those leghorns are probably hylines, but it doesn't matter now. They will be much happier.

Thank you! I needed to hear that. Not for my ego, but affirmation that I did the right thing.

You did the right thing, we all saw the photos... you keep those photos, just in case the cover the butt spinners make real problems... you just show the people over them the photos and tell them yeah they had food and water the next day ‘cause you did the right thing and cared for them. There is no way they were being checked daily... you remember to tell anyone giving you grief the size of the empty containers for H2O and feed...

Way glad the flock is safe now.

Here is where they are now. They are separated for now so they can be integrated, but here's the property. Seven acres for free ranging plus 2 huge coops. There are about 20 hens there already - plenty of room and plenty of hens for the two roosters!
