Job well done.

To those who pointed out the wedge-shaped strip at the top of the window -- that was a great catch and it makes sense that the hinge isn't lying flat against the window frame. We'll either rehang the windows right side up with a different type of hinge, or chisel out under the hinges.

Thanks to all of you who have given help and advice on our window problem - I really appreciate everyone who has taken the time to post to try to help another BYC'er.

It's supposed to be rainy and cold for the next few days, but it should be back in the 60's by wednesday. I'll post pics after we figure this out, in case someone else ever has this problem.

Again...thank you!

Just curious, do you know what was shipped in your crate? It's huge! I picked a crate up at the dump, it was much smaller but worked for my purposes.

Thanks for sharing!

No, but U-Haul rents them out for moving and/or storage for $91.90/month. They come strapped to a trailer and their ad says they hold about a room 's worth of stuff (or a flock of chickens, lol!)

(yours was also FREE!).

Wow--I really hope one of those jobs works out for you and your wife! And I hope the crate coop works for you as well. Since they were made for shipping, with skids on the bottom, they're easy to load with a forklift -- which is how they loaded it on the trailer when we bought it. Now getting it off was a bit trickier with no forklift around here...so we just asked all our sons and nephews to help and they kindly obliged!

Good luck and I hope it all goes well for you!

1st the hinges are the right way but need to be closed and the window like you said gets notched out just like a door. The top part which is the create needs a inside frame of 2X4 around the inside of the crate flush with the cut for the window and now it gets notched out. Then mark how deep the hinge sits inside the opening with the hinge mounted on the window in the notch around the crate first. Now remove the hinge from the window and pull the door hinge pin and screw it into place in the notch no deeper than the mark you made. OK now place the window into the frame with someone on the outside saying it is flush and someone on the inside ready to mark the hinge into the notch. Then screw the second hinge onto the window in the notch. Both hinges on the crate should be in place and both hinges on the window should be in place and now lace the 2 circles of the hinge and the 3 circles on the hinge line up and push the pin in place and the window will line up and close properly. Hint: the notch needs to only be deep enough to make it flush with the tops of both the crate and 2X4 combo and flush on the window frame. Deeper is not better. Set the skill saw only 1/8" unplugged through the guide plate and let it do the notching for you by going back and forth. Slow is the trick no hurry here with a power tool first back and forth and cut lines in the notch and then side to side very easy. Place the hinge plate in the notch and use the other plate on top to see if it just a touch deeper than flush and you got it. Good luck and be careful with the skill saw. Use a fresh blade for ease of use.

I know you mentioned where you got the box off Craig's List but did you find out what it contained? Piano, Motor Cycle or like a wall cabinet?

Edit for spelling I guess I was sleepy
