our SILKIE tractor pic....update on the ramp and silkies

Surely they'll get it eventually! Maybe I need to keep a sussex with all my silkies to make sure they learn how to get up the ramp LOL! I'll have to let you know how it goes with the next batch.

You've got my couriosity up....Wondering if mine will do it.....I've gotta get that coop done to find out.

******UPDATE*******
Well, first day we picked up all fluff babies to put in the run and in the coop...so the ramp didn't work!

This AM, I cooked some pasta (fluffs fav!) and i threw it down the ramp....boy where they giving the ole stink eye for not feeding them...lol
But 4 made it down ok...the last one we had to show the way down and kinda push her. So we'll see what happens for the return run up. I think we may be OK....

Not necessarily...

After two years, mine never got it and I refused to spend another winter climbing into the 4' high run during the dead of winter, in the dark, in my work clothes to put them to bed so they wouldn't freeze to death.

I got rid of all 6 of them. While they were very cute, for me their personalities lacked "something" and I believe it was intelligence.

However, if you have a coop that is ground level, they would "probably" be ok.

Good thing we have more SS chicks coming up... we can use them to train the silkies/showgirls.

Now BBK when they start making it on their own... that's when we celebrate!

I do believe that silkies are some of the least intelligent chicken breeds. It took a couple of weeks for the silkies to go up and down the ramp. Teenage daughter who wanted those silkies crawled thru a lot of chicken poop to put them up every night as they are in an A-frame. Now they all go up the ramp on their own, but one sits at the top of the ramp and squeals like you are killing her when you try to raise the ramp for the night. So we still have to open the top of the A-frame and put her on the roost before raising the ramp.

YES...and it's gonna be a big one. Because they didn't go up the ramp last night...DS had to pick them up and put them in their coop....Maybe it's easier going down!

I hope they're not THAT dumb! Or are they SMART? lol

Yesterday was their first day in the coop/run for them. They were really happy to see me after work...so, it was an awww... moment. I felt wanted... But I really think they wanted more pasta.LOL Even the big girls were purring when i got home, b/c I brought out the dish of pasta.

OK. I'm new to the whole chicken thing. I didn't realize mixing my Silkies with my 'ordinary' chickens could possibly be a problem...they've been together since they were born. I received them at 1 day old & have had always had them together. They were 4 weeks old yesterday. I currently have 16 hens - 3 of which are Silkies and 1 Polish rooster. I have seen the Silkies coming & going on the 'ladder' in & out of the coop. I'm expecting 3 more hens
August 10th - 1 is a Silkie, a Polish Gold hen & 1 Sumatra Black hen.

Are they going to fight? They better not pick on my beautiful Silkies!!

BTW - your coop for your silkies is awesome!! Especially considering it's mostly scrap wood, etc. And, yes. Our marriage was a li'l 'rocky' during our construction also! LOL! Men! If they just understood our love for chickens!!

Good job! Can't wait to see the finished product!!

My Silkies don't seem that bright... but they are so cute. We have their house on the ground and it is still an effort to make them go in at night. As quickly as we put them in, they run out! LOL

I was doing the taking them out putting them in each night. I got tired of that in 2 days. I told them if they want to stay in fine your loss. I only give treats outside in the grass. It took them 4-5 days and they started to come out on their own, and once they came out on their own they go back in on their own too. Good luck.I don't think mine are dumb just more timid. They do not like to free range either. Maybe it has something to do with all those fluffy feathers in their eyes?
