We decided to hatch some chicks this year for friends and also wanted to add a few Buff Orps to our flock.

We got 4 Buff Orp eggs from hinkjc (Jody) and placed them under Churkey along with 3 of our EE eggs, and an assortment of BR and RIR crosses with our EE rooster. All in all, 10 eggs went under Churkey beginning on April 6.

We nicknamed Churkey "Octo-Mom", based on her stealing all the rest of the chickens eggs in order to hatch them. I had to eventually move her to the brooder early to stop her thievery. She ended up with 15 eggs total, stealing five more eggs before the brooder move.

Churkey hatched her first peep on Friday (4/24- Day 18). I wasn't home, so we don't know what egg it came from (it could possibly be Churkey's own baby since the peep is so light in color). We're calling him Mr. Peeps for now.

The next two peeps hatched on 4/26 (Day 20). These both hatched out of the eggs I marked BO (Buff orps). They definitely have the Buff orp coloring and hatched simultaneously. We call them the "Wonder Twins".

Then, this morning (4/27-Day 21), we woke up to our first EE hatch from the olive green egg (Our own EE cross of EE rooster Perry Cox and EE hen Slagathor). Here he/she is tucked under Mom's wing.

So far, 4 of 15 hatched. We are on Day 21 with 11 eggs left. Here's all 4 peeps in action:

We're anxiously awaiting the rest to hatch. It sure is nice having what I like to call "an idiot proof incubator".

Thanks! I'll have an update coming later today.

2 more chicks hatched. An EE that didn't make it. I found it fully formed but dead under mom and a perfectly healthy RIR-EE cross.

So, we're up to 5 healthy chicks, 9 eggs to go.

Sadly, on Day 22/23, Churkey buried her remaining eggs and refuses to sit on them any longer.

I finally removed them from her. She seems happy to care for the 5 chicks that she's got. She is concentrating on being a momma.

Here she is with her 5 peeps (one is under her!) getting ready for bedtime!
