:(The turkey is limping an the third toe on the inside by the" thumb toe" is sort of mangled It's puffy in the middle and at an angle . I don't know how it happened, it was fine yesterday , and then this morning at feed and water check, it was injured.

I think once the injury is a bit older our turkey will be fine... I hope.

One of my turkeys broke a toe a while ago as well. Can you catch him/her and take a closer look? Does it look infected? Is there a "break site" where bone is sticking out? Is the toe still completely attached, or is part of it dangling? Any open/exposed areas?

For right now, if there's anything exposed/sticking out, then I'd just try to apply some neosporin/antibacterial cream and keep an eye on him/her. Make sure there's no pus or discharge coming from the area (if there's anything exposed) and if it's just swollen, pay attention to make sure it's only swelling due to inflammation and not due to bacteria under the surface. My bird's toe was ripped in half and dangling, so I had to remove it a few days later. She's perfectly fine now, but she was limping for a few days.

I think that your bird will probably be limping for a while (week or more) depending on how big the bird is (more weight=more stress on feet= more pain) and how bad the break is. As long as the toe doesn't look infected or gangrenous, I'd leave it alone and just make sure the bird is eating and drinking and not getting picked on for limping around.

This time of year I find that flies are a big problem when birds have injuries. My goose had caught her stomach area on something in the yard. I rinsed it, dried it off and noticed there was a 1 inch gash, but no bones or tendons showing. I used a good spray of Blu-Kote. It keeps flies off the wound and promotes fast healing.

Three days later I caught her and noticed the wound had a hard scab on it. No infection or maggots noted.Whew!

I used to bring in an injured bird to basement to let heal and now I feel it is less stressful to leave them outside if possible.

No exposed bones or anything, just a lump, and crooked. The lump is due to trauma and not infection I do believe. Fortunately this bird's not huge, if it was the biggest bird, big red who probably weighs 15 pounds I'd guess, well that poor bird would be out of luck as far as less weight less stress.
