Outdoor Storage for Food etc.

Northern Virginia and not a particular abundance of room. Plus I would like for the ladies to not jump and poop all over it.
If you put feed can against wall, you can attach a hinged angled cover to keep them off of it. Something like this, I just used wires for 'hinges' and there's a hook above to hold it up when needed:

Metal trash cans on bricks, cheap and long lasting. As for the ants, I live in fire ant country and they get everywhere but I've found a cure. Dust the contents with a light coat of diatomaceous earth. Harmless if not beneficial to the chickens and like razor wire to hard insect exoskeletons.

I dust the top layer of food with the DE and scoop food from the middle so as the food goes down the layer near the outside stays coated. One sprinkle problem gone.

As to water ingress around the handle, old 28 ounce tomato cans inverted over the handle seals well. On a Berens mfg. Trash can the tomato can holds on by friction as in the picture. It's then handy to scoop food too.

DE will kill fire ants?
Clever work with the can.
