Good day all

I got home yesterday to find = - 30 chickens in my fruit tree fenced off area the gardener said that a man from on of the plots near by was moving & he dropped off all these chicken as he was unable to sell them before his move, so now I have these chickens and no idea what they are but I'm thinking of keeping them so need advice what breed are they and how to care for them. there are no little ones just full grown. the roosters are fighting so I might have to get rid of a few or is there a way i can stop them from fighting my husband seems to think the fighting will stop once they get used to their new environment. I went over to the plot to speak to the guy but they had already gone I dont know this guy from a bar of soap. Any advice would be great. Here is a photo of one of the roosters they all look the same is it a pure breed or is it mixed? Thanks again

Howdy! :frow Welcome to our FUNomenal Flock!

Nothing like jumping right in! Do you have a large shelter for them? Do you plan on keeping them all? A large shed, garage or barn temporarily until you can build a coop would work. They need fresh food and water asap. Flock Raiser is a great option for both hens and roosters with oyster shell offered in another container.
For a first timer, I would definitely rehome the roosters. Good luck!

Great advice from Chick-N-Fun. The rooster in your picture looks like a Cochin bantam. He's not a recognized color variety, though. So that means he's either a mixture of bantam Cochin color varieties or a Cochin bantam mixed with another breed. He is cute.

If you decide to keep any of the roosters, limit it to just one, if you can. Those boys will keep fighting even when they get used to their new home. It is their nature. Also, don't choose any rooster that is aggressive towards humans. It's best to choose one that is a little bit skittish around people, because that shows he knows his place.

Good luck with your new flock. Please feel free to ask any questions you might have in the forums-- that is what they are here for. You can also use the 'search' button at the top of your BYC screen to find just about any information you could want, in regard to chickens.
