I would open it up. Mine ignore the peel but LOVE the inside.

Crack the peel. Mine turn into monkeys for banana, scrape the inner peel clean, but leave the outermost skin alone.

And aren’t they amazing at how well they clear the banana off the peel? Same with melon. What they leave is paper thin. Some precision pecking!
