2 years, 3 months. That’s how long the flock has gone without casualty. Unfortunately, after yesterday, that count must be reset.

Yesterday afternoon, a predator, likely a hawk, attacked and killed one of my hens: Banana Split. I wanted this thread to be a small compile of writing and pictures to honor Banana’s legacy.

Banana was the 4th to hatch in my last egg incubation. From the start, she was unique in appearance. Extra orange on her bill, splotchy orange feet.. As an adult, she had white wing tips, and a feather tuft behind her left eye.
I know her and her “twin” sister, Pear, loved each other dearly. They did everything together, even supported each other during egg laying & nesting. Banana also had her boyfriend, Guava, who treated her with the upmost respect.
I’m sorry I couldn’t give you more time. But I hope the time you had was grand.

What a cutie! I'm so sorry for your loss. A hawk came down and killed one of my little ones a few weeks ago. One of the terrible sometimes consequences of letting them live their best outside life.

Is the rest of the flock doing okay?
