I would say just set the trap in the bottom of the water again... if he gnaws off his OTHER hand, he won't be able to catch any chickens, right?

Whe I first read your post my thought was coyote! In Sun City (in Phoenix) I see parts of animals along the walks all the time. It's coyotes that get them cuz they are easy prey. So if it were my guess I would have to say coyotes, or wild dogs.

To date coming to the pen I've either trapped or SSS'd...

1. Mama cat and one of her kittens. - Four kittens left.night time hours. 5/14/10

2. Raccoon. Caught in trap, very young, was going to be picked up by GW he never showed up so young coon is a gonner. 5/15/10

2. Tom cat, broad daylight caught with guinea in his mouth. Guinea lived. 5/18/10

So far that's the pests I've caught. Neighbor up the road is feeding a fox canned cat food, if he stops and the fox gets hungry for a chicken he's next.

I did have another coon set the trap off, and somehow got out of it by the time I went back to get him. The three legged coon is thus far proving to be the most difficult, he's smart.

The best way to catch a coon is to get a log, a pice of foil, two nails, and a drill. drill a hole in the log and put a pice of foil in it. then drive two nails through the top of the log at an angle so that they protrude into the hole making an "L". put the two points about an inch apart. the racoon will reach in to grab the foil and will not be able to pull out. however, since racoons love shiny objects, instead of gnawing his arm off, he will refuse to let go. That's how my nephew and I catch our racoons.

Ooh. I'll try the shiney trick on Mr. Three Arms. I've got plenty of fallen logs with them logging all around here right now (part of the reason for the sudden predator boost I guess. )
