Oyster shell in a feeder or on the ground

Question from my brother who has 10 australorps (2 roo, 8 girls) who are 11 weeks old. He has a septic sand run (so doesn't need to give extra grit) and just saw my oyster shell in a feeder and wants to know: does he need a feeder or can he just throw it out into the sand and let them scratch for it?

Not containing it will lead to considerable loss/waste. Containing also makes it more readily available to the birds to consume at the amount they need without hunting for it

Also, oyster shell, unlike grit, is dissolvable mineral.... scattered and exposed to the elements he'll see waste.
