Hi I'm just wondering if anyone knows how long oyster shell keeps? I've had some for 2 years now and I'm wondering if it is still good to give to my new girls coming this week?

I'm working out of the same 50 pound bag my father gave me when I got chickens 3 years ago.

Oh, and he had the bag when HE last had chickens...25 years ago.

The reason I was wondering is because my first batch of chickens had no problem with it. Last year my new batch wouldn't touch it and I had poor egg shell quality.

How did you present it to them? Is it oyster shells ground up for chickens?

Was in a rabbit feeder screwed to the wall beside my feeder.

And yes it's for chickens. I bought it at my local feed store.

Throw it down in the run so tgat naturally scratch it up & find it like they would pebbles when they are free-ranging.

How I train my Young layers to eat the Oyster shell...I put a handful of scratch in it too..Once They get used to the Shell I stop using the scratch...Now they all use the oyster shell...
