Oyster Shell

I know about keeping it separate from their feed. I was just wondering if I should be offering it to them before or after they start laying? Or is it just a wait and see if their shells are soft the offer it to them type of thing.

Thanks for all the help everyone. I feel like a first time parent AGAIN. lol

Love the layers pellets! Crumble turns to dust to fast wasted. Never used oyster shell, the pellets have all the calcium they need, all our eggs are hard and thicker, compared to store bought ones

It's takes forever for the 1st one to lay

It'll be soon, ours started at 5 months and the last of the 4 just started a couple weeks ago. Since then (September) they've layed almost 8 dozen :

) Good luck to you!

Just went down to my local feed store and bought some oyster shell I put it in a small container and put it in their coop. One of the hens that has been squatting the most ate some. The others looked at it and didnt eat any. So I guess its all up to them.

Thanks again everyone!

We put our oyster shell seperate from their feed and we don't add any other grit. They free range during the day so they get what they need. We started using it because our girls shells were soft at first, now they are hard and thick.
