are your chickens confined or free range?
Im wondering if you also offer grit?
Im wonder if your hen trying to put grit in her crop and only has the oyster shell.
I offer both of these things free choice 24/7 X 365.
Both are inexpensive and last a long time.

We have a small flock. 4 hens. Three almost ready to lay pullets. They are all on grower crumble. I will switch in the next week or two to a layer pellet feed. That has worked for us for 3+ years. YMMV
