Ok, I live on the coast and have easy access to oyster shells...is there a way to capitalize on them in a way to feed the chickens? How would I grind them up? Or would they just peck away at them on their own?

seems like a little work with a hammer would do the trick. The prepared stuff appears to have the sharp edges worn off, so I don't know how fine it needs to be

wonder if a coffee grinder would be strong enough to crush it?

I live on the coast too and I just use a hammer. It's a nuisance though because those shells are a bugger. They're hard as nails to break. I just make the pieces about half the size of gravel. It seems to work. In the winter I just buy them though.

As an added note: we got our very first egg yesterday and so my 7 year old was soooo excited to see it that he promptly began rigging up a grinding station with two concrete pavers and has been diligently grinding oyster shell for our girls.

And interestingly, the only one to give it any notice was the newly laying EE!

I would be happy to keep him until 14 yrs for you. Then he is all yours. I just tied my son's shoes together and hung him upside down in the closet until he was 17. It was easier on both of us that way....
