Hello all!
My wife and I got our first chickens last March. We started off with 10, but a raccoon killed one and another just suddenly died. We just got 6 more baby chicks a few weeks ago, so no we are up to 14. I am currently in the process of building a new coop, as our first coop isn't quite large enough.

Our first batch wasn't well thought out. We just went to Wilco and picked out random breeds. Egg production hasn't been the greatest as a result which is why we decided to get more. It's been an interesting journey, and I look forward to seeing it through!

Hi! I know you aren't alone in dealing with those darned raccoons (I've lost quail to them and it's never a nice thing to go through.) We do have a nice Predators & Pests Forum if that sounds helpful in sourcing deterrent ideas. I'm hoping the best for your growing flock! Please keep us posted with how they are all doing!

Thanks for joining and welcome to BackYard Chickens!

:frow Hi, welcome! And thank you for joining! Yeah, those raccoons, boy ... they can be the bane of your existence as a chicken tender. But it is possible to foil them! Congratulations on the new chicks! A word of unsolicted advice: don't just build big enough to accommodate these six. Build twice as big as you think you need. Why? (Whispering) chicken math, that's why. It hits all of us, and if it doesn't hit you, you're the rare exception! :lau Lol. Good luck and enjoy your chickens!

Welcome!
