I'm about to order 4 chicks from my pet chicken. Will they send along additional chicks? I don't have room for more than 4 chicks as I only have a 4x4 coop with a 4x8 run. Perhaps I should try harder (I'm trying hard) to source locally. I'm in an urban area, Colorado Springs, and feed stores are few and far between.

Hello,

I would post on your state thread to find a breeder or two. Then if I did have to drive to get them, so be it. If I find birds that I really want I will drive up to 5 hours 1 way and make a mini trip out of it. Have fin on your hunt. What breeds are you looking for? Also post on the breed threads that you are looking for a breeder on your area. Hope this helps. Let us know what you find.

Thanks, I'll explore that route this am.

If you do order from mypetchicken they don't use packing peanuts....this was partly how we chose them. they were also the only place to get sexed bantams. other than that we would have gone local as you're admirably trying to do. but no, they don't use peanuts and supply heat packs and ventilation holes as the weather calls for. our order was what we ordered and no more.

Thanks, exactly what I needed to know.

I contacted the hatchery I used (Meyers) before my ship date and asked them not to send any additional "packing peanuts" and they gladly obliged. I ordered 5 chicks. Just FYI, though, two were weak and didn't make it. I probably wouldn't mail order such a small group again but it was my first time.

Yes, I think it's very weather dependent. We got 7 and they shipped from Ohio 2.5weeks ago. At that time heat was the bigger worry but they arrived two days later healthy and peeping. Others aren't necessarily so lucky but it helps to not order in sweltering temps or freezing cold....and to pick a closer hatchery.
ONSTAD, let us know when you make your chick decision and we'll be cheering for their safe arrival whichever way you get them!
