So it seems my chicks love to make a mess of their waterer. From what I see this is normal. I got the little self filling water cups which worked great but I couldn't get them tight enough in the PVC pipe and they broke off and got everything all wet. So I think I need a thinner material so I can engage more of the threads on the back to hold it tighter. My question is would it be safe to use and old plastic paint can with the water cups. I would of course remove all the paint and wash it thoroughly. I don't want to spend all sorts of money for the brooder and I'm tired of cleaning out the waterer that I have now. Thanks for the help.

Water based, acrylic paint...maybe?

Oil based paint, no. I can't imagine all the chemicals being out of the plastic.

There's a LOT of chemicals in most paint that are very toxic. I'm inclined to think it isn't the best use of the paint can but appreciate wanting to save money.
