paint vs stain for the coop?

It looks like your coop was made with T1-11 exterior panels. That type of panel comes already with a coat of primer where I live. So you just have to paint it whatever color you want. I don't think you can apply any stain over painted wood.

As far as paint goes, I am just finishing building my first chicken coop and decided to go with a classic barn red for the coop with barn white trim. And by Barn Red and Barn White, that is exactly what the cans say on their labels at Menards, Home Depot, and our local fleet farm store. The "barn" red and white are about half the price of other paints. Normal price here is $12.99 per gallon for the barn paints but our local fleet store has a sale on them this week for $10.99 per gallon. I don't know why the barn paints are so much less expensive, but it worked out great for me. I just finished the second coat of red paint this evening and will start the trim tomorrow. It looks really good to me.

I ordered paint from Home Depot and they did not offer red, it is on the way as clear.
Now I will have to contact them and go for the Barn Red. The fact that what I ordered was clear not red is why I was looking for a red stain first. Thank you for giving me this heads up!!

I live in Oregon so no Menards store here.
Our Home Depot does not carry Barn Red brand.
Not certain how to proceed. Maybe I have to enter the whole name of Barn Red and Barn White??

That did not work. Guess I will have to order red stain and apply it first then the clear paint after.

I just went out to the garage to check the brand name on the Barn Red and Barn White paint cans. It appears that the company is called "Magic." I cannot remember if Home Depot, Menards, and our local L&M Fleet all had the same "Magic" brand, but they all had Barn Red and Barn White for about half the price of other "normal" paints.

FYI, I had a number of reasons with going for the Barn Red and Barn White. First of all, I like the looks of that combination and think it looks great on my gambrel roof shed style chicken coop. It's like a mini barn in the back yard. Another reason that I wanted to go with the Barn Red and White is that I am color blind, and there is no way I wanted to get into matching colors for future work and/or touch up if required. It's a no brainer for me just to pick up another can of Barn Red or Barn White and be highly confident it will match.
