So the coop has birds in it, but I need to paint the outside.

Trying to figure out if I have to take the birds out to paint.

Of course I want them safe.

Thoughts....

They make low-VOC (volatile organic compounds - the smelly chemicals) paints that are healthier for the painter and everyone else. Not sure if they make it in exterior paint, though.

Are you spraying your coop or brush and rolling? What type of paint or stain are you goi g to use(water based or petroleum based)

I was going to either brush/roll something on. Or use a deck stain in a pump sprayer. No aerosol cans. I was hoping to go with something clear maybe linseed oil or clear deck stain. I think spraying it on with the pump sprayer might be the fastest I just gotta tape up the window.

Thanks for all the replies

With your application I would make sure all openings are covered. I would look at the VOCs for linseed oil or the deck stain you are planning to use. If you did go with a deck stain I would use water based (less caustic)

I how big is your coop or the areas that you will be staining?

Coop is about 120 sq ft of wall to paint.

Looks like a fair amount of space. It also looks like you can move your birds out. I would think you would be ok to let the birds out and apply as you plan on. If they are laying they will be in and out throughout the day. I would cover the openings while applying around then just to help reduce the amount of stain the makes it inside your coop.

Yeah i can put them out. They are all still too Young to start laying. Thanks!

Hopefully everything will work out for you.

Just remember they can be a little nosy at times.
