Painting the inside of the Coop

We are in the current process of building our coop and having lots of fun doing it too~! Yes, we painted the inside of the coop
a nice blue. I read somewhere to make it cherry for the chickens. Now whether they can see color or not I dont know. But it does look
so much better. And I would think it would make it easier to clean.

One of the biggest benefits of painting the interior of the coop is that the paint seals the cracks where roost mites can hide. Mites feed on your chickens then jump off and live in any small place they can find. That's one of the things that bothers me about many pre-fab coops out there, they are built with OSB (Oriented Strand Board or "Particle board") which has an unlimited number of places for bugs to hide.

I filled all of the inside cracks with paintable silicon caulking and primed/painted over that. The porch paint was nice and thick and it really covered every surface really well. Now, if I ever need to give the coop a really good scrubbing, I can get out the hose and a scrub-brush and really clean it without worrying about wet plywood.

I painted the inside of mine white - it was free recycled paint from the recycling center - so awesome!

I love how much brighter and nicer it looks in there.

Of course, it's also more obvious when something is dirty, but that's o.k.

There's a link in my signature line that shows the initial construction and painting of our coop - with pictures.

Fear of mites was why I caulked and painted the inside of my closed coop, also. Last summer, a friend of ours lost some chicks to a mite infestation in nestboxes that he didn't notice until too late... horrible! I hate mites.

Mine's painted inside and out. No regrets. Especially when it's spring cleaning time. Poo just rinses away with no scrubbing necessary. Make sure you prime first.

Thanks for all of your replies... I have finished priming inside and out. On to the paint. Has anyone here used the Valspar Duramax paint from Lowe's?
Supposedly very thick - only one coat necessary.
Also, my plan is to go with a semi-gloss... Will that suffice for cleaning purposes?
