I was so excited when I walked around the pond and the one in the picture fussed at me...I also love Hawks, Owls, Eagles....I just love all animals.....I have even picked up an injured barred Owls from the side of the road and taken it to a rehab facility.. That bird was hit by a car and it eyes had been destroyed so they put it down....I was very sad..The lady I had taken it to said it would have never been able to fly to a tree and would have been eaten by ants or attacked by a dog....So I guess it died the best way.......My DH thinks I have lost my mind when it comes to animals.....I guess I have....

Maybe now would be a good time to invest in a Great Pyreneese puppy (or pyr/border collie cross)? Our Pyr gets irate when hawks and ravens circle overhead. It may be worth researching the breed.

The Mockingbirds and Jays will keep them away from the house this summer. They don't like them and will harass them till they leave, plus raise cane so all of the prey animals take cover.

we have a few hawks but they never seem to bother anything...but who knows maybe ours our vegitarians

Big Red's Mom :

I kept hearing Hawks very close to my house in the mornings.....The other day I walked out to look around and found them...I have a pair of young Red Tail Hawks building a nest beside the little pond in my yard.

Beautiful shots!

I don't think those are Red Tails though. Such young birds I don't believe wold got to nest in their first year, and the stripes on the tail of that bird don't look anything like immature Red Tail. You may have something rarer nesting in your yard. I'll do a little poking around to see if I can figure out what species it is.

*Edit to add: I believe those are Red Shouldered Hawk. The distinctive white stripes on the tail look just about right for what species. Do you have an front shots of the birds? Immature Red Tails have dark stripes on the tail.

Even if your out with them, red tails and other hawks will swoop down and grab a chicken. FIL neighbor had a wee little pooch on a leash when a hawk came down and grabbed the 3 lb dog to never be seen again.
If you have that threat of a hawk, you will need more then a net covering for the pen. I was told that even 2" chicken wire would not be enough to keep them out.
For right now, we have net, but gosh, use care guys and especially when the nursery is just above your yard!! I think if I found that nest in my tree, that they would be disrupted several times- oh, and its illegal BTW.
