Hello, ya'll! So we are nearly finished building our pallet coop now and I want to make sure it's safe for our ducks once they're ready to go in. Our main concern is mold at the moment since we're using untreated pallets and we live in the rainy state of Washington. So far we gave the whole coop a distilled white vinegar soak to flush out any potential spores and we plan to hang some damprids like another brilliant user on here suggested. My main question is whether or not I should treat or paint the interior to lessen the risk of mold or health issues in the future and what products/treatments might be suggested. I do plan to lay some vinyl sticker on the floor of the coop for easy cleaning and I plan to paint the outside just to make it pretty but I wasn't sure if the interior needed a little something. Thank you for any suggestions! So glad to have found this community as an over-thinking first-time duck owner. :)

I would paint it, and make sure there's lots of ventilation. How much ventilation do you have in the coop? It should be at least 1sq. ft per bird, more is better
We're leaving plenty of space on the top and covering it with hardware cloth! If it's given plenty of time to dry should the paint not be a potential health concern? I worry a bit because they love pecking the side of their kiddie pool brooder.

I think the paint should be fine. Once they're bigger they'll be more fascinated with mud and water than paint. Just wait.

Pics?
Keeping the pallets from getting wet would be the best deterrent.

we plan to hang some damprids
This will not do a darn thing, especially in your climate.

Welcome to BYC! @Jayneehartland
Here's how to add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, and then it's always there!

I have a cement floor but my walls are osb wood that I didn’t paint
I use good tarps on my floors and up my walls so the wood never gets touched by wet poo
I don’t keep water or feed in my pen to avoid wet messes
Sorry the pic is blurry but you get the idea
