Yes, I tried to clarify the post and just muddled it. She sprayed the fonts. She has ideas. Now I wonder if she brought the can of spray back into our kitchen. Hmmmm.

I have the same experience, the buckets of water stay clean and you can see the birds drinking. Easy to fill with a hose from the outside of the run. I have two buckets that I space out and refill every few days and nary a poo on them. Not many feathers either.

I have water bowls all over their free range area. They occasionally stand or walk thru them but rarely poop there. They get fresh water every 2-3 days anyway. More often in summer and winter.

I think I'd be frightened if I was sprayed with oil, too.

OK, to keep the chickens off of our (their) galvanized poultry font, my chickspouse sprayed them with (the fonts) cooking spray (Pam). They were frightened, because they know the last time they encounter that spray will be in the frying pan....

I made her stop.

It seems to have broke them of the habit...or maybe they are getting too big now.

I use a 5gal. bucket with those nipple type cups all around. I hang it so its not on the ground. It has a lid that I cut a flap in for easy filling. It hags from the handle to which I have applied 2 thick strips of strong tape on either side of the hook so it doesn't slip sideways. In winter I remove this set up an put this heated waterer up on blocks to prevent their excessive scratching resulting in water filled with dirt and bedding. They can't stand on either setup. The hanging bucket is too wobbly.
