Panda Type Quail

I only have standard coturnix. We were told they were jumbo browns but they're not very big, probably around 1/2 lb each? Sorry, I'm just getting started. They're really pretty, in my opinion, but not anything fancy that I know of.

I sold the last of my A&M and panda (both standard size) before Thanksgiving to make room for the jumbo golden and meat maker pharaoh that were in the brooder. I began phasing out standard size birds except for cinnamon, Tibetan and silver which I am line breeding to increase size. I have a nice, fat silver tuxedo roo that made the breeding cut that I have high hopes for next spring.

Some of my silver tuxedos:

Those are gorgeous birds you got there. Are the silver tuxedo autosex? If so maybe I can buy some eggs from you in the spring. Mine are not the autosex type and eeeeeew. It's something I really want to get away from. Except for my breeders I just don't sex them unless there is one I want to keep.

There's a few hens that lay monster eggs. None of these eggs will hatch for me. Any tips? I incubate @ 45% and lock down on day 15 @ 65%.

Thank you! Unfortunately none of the tuxedo colorations can be feather sexed. By next spring, 1/2 of my aviary will be jumbo/meat maker color sex (pharaoh, golden and fawn), and the other 1/2 will be the colors that we just can't do without that have to be vent sexed (Tibetan, tuxedo, silver, scarlet, white, golden-lace)

It is possible that your monster eggs are double-yolks and are extremely rare to hatch. I would cull the abnormal monster eggs and hatch the largest normal eggs, you will progressively get bigger birds.

Here is a picture of a golden lace. I ended up with only 2 of 6 hatching from my last hatch. I am one of the 1st to get this coloration from the breeder that developed the color.

The golden lace is very pretty as well. Show us some pics of your scarlet I really like those. Will standard quail get bigger as you breed them?

@JuJubeann

These are some of my Scarlet. Some people call them cinamon but we don't currently have cinnamon in the U.S. They display a variety of reddish-brown to a rusty-chocolate coloration.

Cynbad the roo. One of my breeders.

Is he a tuxedo or a scarlet or both? Gorgeous! Any chance you would sell or swap some hatching eggs?

Yes, that little man is a Scarlet Tuxedo. Very good with the ladies, calls them over when I give him crickets and grasshoppers, he won't eat them, he drops them at the hens feet.

I may be willing to ship eggs next spring. We'll need to keep track of this thread for contact.
