Panic Doors + Questions

Today I set up some panic doors for my chicks.

There is twelve of them all with different ages. The youngest of the flock being about 4 weeks while the oldest being about 6.

The reason I set up these doors is because I wanted to allow the older ones to start integrating.

Will the younger chicks know if they are too cold? Should they be able to find the heat?

Your chicks should have no trouble figuring out the panic doors and also going back under heat should a sudden snow storm hit Phoenix.

I'm being sarcastic about your climate because I lived for years near Yuma. I know how warm it is at this time of year in the desert, and that there is zero chance of it getting anywhere near freezing.

By the time chicks are three weeks old, they need no heat during the day when they are eating and their bodies are producing calories for heat. At night, by four weeks, as long as it's over 50, they need no heat to get them through the night, either.

How many adult chickens do you have? Roosters? I begin letting my two week old chicks mingle with the adult flock using their panic doors and panic room. They are brooded in the run, so they've already learned all of the adult flock's behavior patterns. They take about thirty minutes to figure out the doors, and are so fast, the adults are no match, but I still limit the excursion into the flock on the first day, and I watch to see how well they are figuring out the system.
