I didn't want to post this but it's not getting better....

This afternoon around 3pm I gave Bonnie some steamed rolled oats... got them from reputable feed store and they looked ok. She only ate a few and then went on about her way...

Don't know if it's a coorilation or not but around 6pm she started keeping 1 eye closed... standing and not moving around much with the other geese on the pond......

Dont' know if she got something in that eye, bruised it, something stuck it (it's awefully dry here in TEXAS) or what....

I put 1tsp and then 1tbsp per gallon of ACV in the water tubs and put her in penned area. She drank them. Her poo is brown and kinda watery.

The other geese didn't nibble the oats... she only ate about 5-10 of them anyway and chewed them up. I thought it would be better than the cracked corn they are gobbling down from the feeders for the wild ducks!

I hate myself!! I am sick and blaming myself. Idon't know if it's something in the water, she stuck her eye or it was the oats. Her other eye is open, she seems like she doesn't feel well.... all the geese are moulting --- feathers everywhere.

I am watching her on a baby monitor all night long and up every hour or so checking to make sure she is alive. She looks normal but for the eye closed......

I hate waiting through the night on something like this and there is nothing I can do apparently right now....

Don't know if the oats were moldy or if it was something else...... Soooooooo worried..... sooooo upset!!! Any advice or ideas???

Hi

Very hard to say whats wrong at this stage as may not be the feed and she was already a little off colour.

Do give us more details of how she is now.

If you can flush the eye with some saline. Could have even gotten a scratch. Terramycin eye ointment does wonders for that. I have some I got from my vet, but I think you can get from a feed store as well. Keep us posted.

She's up this morning - same thing - eye closed - moving around honking and went on a wandering walk which was unusual for her......

I have some Tylan - I can put in her water for 3 days. How do you dose it for a 1 gallon waterer or about 1 gallon bucket?

I have some Terramycin ointment I believe (from chicken med box) - or I can get some at feed store today.... Should I put that in her eye?

We have avian vet in the area not sure if they know how to treat GEESE - I can take her to vet in the morning..... if they're in. Hate to wait til Tuesday.....

They all been eating lots of cracked corn! They get it out of the pans for the whistler ducks that come by. I am trying to get them OFF CORN! They are all moulting badly - feathers everywhere!!!

I have Mazzuri (for waterfowl) and Flockraiser pellets out now...... she is eating grass, took a bath and is out in field with others. BUT---- our fields here look like weed deserts with 3" cracks! There is some green but it is weeds and bermuda patches/etc. The drought in Texas is unbelieveable - no one knows!!!!!!!

We have better grass near the house.... they come up here and munch sometimes and near the pond too....

She could have caught something from any one of the wild ducks/birds/etc. coming up here for food and water --- it's bad here..... real bad on all the wildlife. No rain for months, no food, no forrage, nothing.....

Ok, starting to panic reading all this crap on the internet about eyes closed, sick birds, infection, worms, etc.......

She seems to be acting mostly like herself but the eye is closed......

Can I use contact lense saline solution --- it's just saline....... to flush her eye?

I'm going to store to get Tylan now and Terramycin ointment for the eye if I can find it at feed store.....

Saline eye solution is just fine. That's what I use. Personally I don't use antibiotics unless I know for sure what the problem is (respiratory, etc) Ducks and geese don't usually get diseases like the chickens do. Since everything else seems fine, my bet is something scratched the eye whether it be dirt or another birds nails). I would just do the flush and Terramycin ointment. JMO

OK - GOT THE OINTMENT!!!!!!!!!

Got the saline.... going to administer this afternoon. Do I keep her away from the other geese? Let her run around with them? They all stick their heads in the same buckets/water bowls/baby pools/etc.... and all swim in the big pond flopping mid-day. Will a little of the ointment hurt the others if it gets in the water??

How many times a day do I do it?

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HAVE ANSWERED AND RESPONDED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I believe it is 2-4 times a day. I would at least do it twice a day. That's what we have done and it has been fine for roosters and ducks. I say if it is just an eye scratch there is no need to separate, but if you think it could be more than definitely separate. Also I don't think it is a problem for the others to share the water. Might try to limit expose to water for a bit after the ointment is applied just to make sure it gets a chance to work. Hope it all works out

Ok, just went out to change water in pool.... this morning she was walking around eating - right eye closed some but looking kinda normal - she's an Embden and not real active as the others anyway.... she was walking around pecking at grass/etc this morning. It is hot here..... they are all moulting..... I don't think she's overheated.... but she has been standing in the pool a-lot lately and they go in the pond and whatever.... so don't think they get too hot..... shade available / etc.

I went out and filled the pool - the others were across the yard eating... and she went while I was standing there and got in it and stood - not unusual... so I watched her... she closed that right eye and then started closing the other, looked like she was dozing... she squinted the other, closed one and then bobbing her head like an old man does a bit when they are napping off.... I walked a little closer - she opened both and gave me a once-over... then I looked the other way like I wasn't looking at her.... and she did it again... closed the right eye shut... (that's the first one that was shutting last night) and then squinted/closed the other and acted like she was dozing and dreaming a bit.....

I got closer and she popped both open, got out of the tub (it was good clean cold water...) and went about picking at grass..... 15 minutes later she is still picking around. Not standing in pool or dozing. They eye is definitely bothering her.... she keeps reaching up with her foot every now and then bends her head and scratches with her toenail around her eye and chin area near that eye.... like it itches......

I have Tylan, TerraVet, Duramycin, everything but Baytril. I have the teramyacin ointment for her eye and when it cools off a little this afternoon I'll catch her and bring her in and flush her eye and put the ointment in it....

Dont' know if I should isolate her in a pen (it's so hot out here and I'd hate to pen her up) and give her antibiotics yet or what.....I keep watching to see if it is getting worse or better.... seems the same until the dozing thing! That spooked me then she acted normal again.

Her poo has been watery and clear and then it was brown when others are packed green with grass..... Should I give her ACV? Someone said not to give that in the heat times like this..... her poo may be clear/watery and like that because she got some water with acv in it last night (1tsp/gal) it wasn't much but it was some.... she didn't drink a lot of that because she went into her coop and it was late....

Hope all this helps someone get a clearer idea or atleast keep up with me on this..... I'll do the ointment in a while.... it's 105 out there right now! She's staying close to her pool and the pond and the fans.... so keeping them cool and not stressing them I don't want to grab her. Also, they're all moulting. She looks thinner in her head/neck but there are feathers everywhere from everyone - they are picking their down and little feathers off...... big ones fell a week or so ago...... they are replacing their feathers and feathering out pretty good... she's all feathered out already..... but neck still has rough feathers...
