We were advised by a friend to give our chickens tetracycline in their water due to they appeared to have colds. I am seriously regretting this choice. I am afraid we will never be able to eat our eggs again. It says that we should never give to laying chickens, I didn't realize this. Can we never eat their eggs again?? I called my local feed store where the medication was purchased and they said they will be fine to eat again after 14 days. On this site I have read 5 days, due to a chart. Which is correct and can we ever eat their eggs again, and why does the label say do NOT use in laying birds. Please help! Thank you so much!!!!!!

5 days should be fine, 14 for better safety margin. but no big deal. no need to fret about it, just like any other antibiotic treatment. follow the package directions for treatment though. Keep up treatment until they are symptom free for about 5 days or so.
