Im wondering why my hen is panting every 10 to 20 seconds. she seems fine otherwise. Although, she does have a messy butt. I've been meaning to stick her in epsom salt bath for a few days now, but haven't gotten to it. Will do tomorrow. Could a pasty butt cause her to suddenly have a breathing problem? If not, what else could I check and do for her. The other four hens are not doing this, it's only the one hen, so I don't think it's from being overheated. If it were, the other hens would be panting also. They were free ranging for a couple hours. When I went to check them to make sure they all got into the coop for the night, that's when I noticed her panting. She was sitting in the nesting box, but they will do that sometimes in the evening hours. Being in the box didn't alert me to a possible problem, the panting did. So, I opened the box from outside and she stood up and walked out without problem and jumped up on a roost. She looks okay otherwise. I'd love others' thoughts. I'm worried for her. I don't think there is anything toxic that she could have had access to in the yard. I have a flower bed they haven't bothered yet, that I know of. There is some organic slug bait pellets around the flowers, but it's supposed to be safe for other animals and pets, it's called Slugo or something like that. I wish I didn't let them alone outside... I usually stay outside to keep an eye on them when they are free ranging, but I came inside to do something and i actually forgot they were out of their run. So, I'm kicking myself now. They were alone for probably 60 to 90 minutes, but they have never wandered very far before, although I never left them alone when roaming free, either :(
