Hi all,

I have read and searched all panting issues here but still wanted some new input. My Cochin has been laying eggs for about a month. All eggs have been perfect except for today. She layed soft shell. We left overnight for only 16 hours 4pm to 8am but I think she got stressed. Also I have been giving her to much frozen corn (bad!) and she needs to eat her Manna Pro Egg Maker-I know. Her soft shell was intact until she stepped on it so it did not break inside her. But, she is panting pretty hard today. It did get up to about 90 degrees here Vero Beach Florida. I have fans on her (them-I have one Polish also). I checked down her throat for gape worms and her poops today but everything looks good. Cochin has recently been broody but has stopped. They do not free range but I do bring in white sugar sand and grass clipping for them to mess around in. I have a pack of Terra Vet which is Oxytetracycline. It is used for respiratory disease and fowl cholera. Maybe put a small dose in water to prevent or cure whatever she has going on. I have experience in vet care mainly w/caged birds, dogs, and cats. I just want to get input like I said. Ivomec scares me. I just might have to get some anyway.

Thanks

My polish (who is mixed with Appenzellar Spitzenhauben I have come to find out from picture of week-ha)Dolly, panted a little today but not near as much as Loretta, cochin. Loretta has a heavier coat of feathers. She has panted before when temps went up in 80's but this kind of panting is alarming. She went in her nest box to lay but did not. Man I hope she doesn't have problems laying. I just love her. She is so adorable. I will keep an eye on her poop and check her throat again. Anybody know how big the red gape worms are? They are having intermittent diarrhea but I attribute that to the heat. I sure hope the panting is because of heat-better than having those darn gape worms. Temps are going down tonight but man we have hot summers here.
