Hello

I read on the internet that papaya seeds (in powder form) are good for keeping worms away from hens, but I can't see how much to give them, does anyone have an idea? Should I just add a bit to their feed every day?

Thanks in advance

Hi, welcome to BYC! :frow

Don't buy into all the MYTHS unless their is scientific studies to back it up. Or unless someone has before and after fecal counts to prove their claim.

Many say DE and pumpkin seeds or hot peppers can also prevent worms. While it's true that SOME might make the digestive track "uncomfortable" there is no evidence of it ACTUALLY working and in some instances actual evidence that it doesn't.

Besides... prevention is a good idea... but you can't prevent what you don't have, not all pastures and environment face the same issues... BEST prevention I know of is not over crowding, good hygiene, and good NUTRITION.

This is the first time I heard of papaya... it would be great to see something natural and effective. I am open to and hopeful of learning new things that aren't just bunk hacks! Please share your info. :pop

Sorry In don't have the answer to your question, I am here to learn as well. :thumbsup

Would be more believable if the 'research study' was linked, showing that the flock had tested positive for worms(including species and counts), and control groups was left untreated and another group being fed the papaya powder...then both tested again(with species and counts). Plus not sure the seeds and the powder are the same as far as effectiveness.
There are many 'myths'.

There will never be studies on any natural prevention. That cost money and the government will not approve it and take the chance to lose money. Natural prevention is always better then filling the body(any body)with poison, that's a fact. A good example is the study on rabies, it has been proven that one single vaccine covers a dog for at least 7 years right now. What is the government doing about it? Nothing, pets still have to have those vaccines(which studies show are causing issues) because it's about money.

I say good for anyone that looks at and researches alternative ways to avoid poisoning themselves or pets. The FDA and government do not care about you.

Thank you. While I would like to see the study... it's great that you are bringing conversation to the table! :thumbsup

According to the article you posted... it says to "cure" worms not to prevent them... and it also does not include which species that it worked against.

However, it DOES have the answer to your original question as follows...

"To cure worms, researchers gave chickens three grams of powdered papaya seeds for every kilogram of live weight. This dose was repeated for two days. Treating coccidioides requires a higher dose over a longer period of time. Chickens were cured with 3.5 grams of powdered papaya seeds for every kilogram of live weight, given for six consecutive days."

I notice the second link from another poster was using a specific type of papaya... so I would wonder how much that factors in?

Are you considering getting a fecal float with before and after species load counts... to see how well it really works for you and share your results with us?

I wonder why they powdered the seeds instead of letting the crop grind them down? :pop

Homeopathic remedies scare me; just a bunch of witch doctors and snake oil salesmen
I both agree and disagree...

I wish we knew more like some native people's might have... but big pharma who has the government in their pockets and with their own agenda...:rant don't wan't us knowing that we CAN use ginger to help our upset stomach instead of pepto dismal and MANY other things that really do work... like baking soda instead of Tumms for heartburn. To big pharm and the losers in their pockets trying to keep us sick! :tongue

I swear by coloidial silver. It works better then most stuff I've tried. From healing wounds to respitory infections.

Last week one of the chickens hurt her foot. Looked like a hardware cloth wound. I cleaned it with the coloidial silver--healed up by next morning. I got in the middle of a dog fight, used on my wounds--healed right up. More recently everyone at work got sick. They were all taking antibiotics and strong over the counter stuff. As soon as my throat started I started the colliadial silver. Never went any further then my throat hurting for a couple hours. No medication needed. Love that stuff. And studies will show it is not effective--my butt it's not.
