Paper or Plastic

I prefer the paper ones too. The plastic ones I have take up too much storage space--they fold over twice. OTOH, I pretty much take whatever people bring me.

I was going to go with paper until I saw the clear plastic ones for sale through a hatchery. I am thinking of selling mine at a farmers market in an upscale area and the clear would also be appealing to a segment of customers.

I prefer the paper, but use whatever my customers bring me. I have a friend that ordered the ones you can personalize...they were cute, but I didn't want to put the extra $$$ into that...so we use what we have.

we are selling mostly to coworkers and egg carton return rates are not real high. so we just got a bunch of paper ones which I personally prefer (can order online or get at the feed store) and a date stamper. but if someone brings cartons in, we'll use theirs.

I am also trying to prepare for onslaught of spring/summer laying

and purchased 2 types of clear plastic cartons from eggcartons.com (3x4 & 2x12 which breaks into 2x6) and have been disappointed in both

and am now seriously considering pulp/paper.

I wanted plastic for reusability and to show off various colors of my eggs but the 2x6/12 trifold break after a month or two of use and the 3x4 were difficult to open after closing and would break when trying to re-open.

I wish I could find the quality of the "egglands best" clear cartons (I had a few from eggs I purchased at the store) they last for 6 months or more before breaking.

Hoped to avoid paper because I read somewhere that it's not considered sanitary to reuse them - whereas the plastic one's can be washed and in some area's recycled.

Would love to know if anyone finds a clear plastic carton they just love.

Lorie - thanks so much for the tip.

The brands I purchased were tri-fold clear (nice clarity) and sodesa (not as clear) and I hadn't tried the ovotherm. I really like the tri fold's clarity but the center fold doesn't hold up very long - I'm off to order the Ovotherm!

thank you, thank you - and I'll be sure to post how they perform for me .. starting to have eggs coming out my ears.

I think microwaving the paper would be adequate for sanitation. That would kill any microorganisms. If you mean just cleanliness; yes that would be something to ponder.

I'm not sure what my customers prefer, but I decided on using clear plastic so no one needs to open the cartons to see the eggs. I also use the Ovotherm and find they hold up well and are nice and clear. However, they don't get re-used (I never have anyone returning the cartons to me, not yet, anyway) so it is still questionable how they would hold up over time, but they do seem to be pretty strong.
