paralysis in 2 of my hens legs, strange signs here, help!!!

been reading about vitamin therapys, does anyone think that this could help? read a post that someone put up about how they had a lame hen and did some vitamin B and E therapy and it cured thier chicken. could that be a good idea?

Right now, I have been given a vitamin regimen to put my silkie pullet on...it's 400 iu's of vitamin E twice daily...just clip the end off the tablet and put on a small piece of bread...and 1/2ml of poly vi sol per day. My pullet is still eating and drinking fine. The vitamin therapy seems to be halting the progress but I'm not sure that she is getting better. I have switched everyone to layena and have put vitamins in all waterers. It doesn't seem to have any effect. I have a polish cockeral who can't control his neck...I'm going to have my husband euthanize when he gets home. I hate the word cull!

Thanks for the information on thiamine deficiancy. I am going to research further. However, the pullet that died and has been necropsied was eaten alive by tumors...lungs, liver, reproductive tract...all tumor filled. The only thing not effected was her nerves, seems they were normal. The only small ray of hope in all of this.

How do you get more thiamine into them? Just more vitamins?

ive been doing some research and it could also be a vitamin E deficiancy or botulism. i remember 2 days ago their water was full of poop because someone sat right above it while they were sleeping and no doubt they all drank some of that water even though i changed it as fast as i could. any advice on what i should try? i am not sure about the vitamin E deficiancy, i will have to check their supplement to see if there is vitamin E in it. if not then i will get some and give them all vitamin E just in case, but what about a treatment for botulism? i know botulism will go away in a little while but if there is a treatment for it could anyone tell me. please i would really like some advice on this, i feel kind of useless because i have no idea what to do and i know it sounds wimpy but my chickens are a member of my family and i would be devistated if i were to loose one, so please if anyone can help please do.

I hope it's a deficiency. But I had 3 "broken legs" before I realized it was Marek's. But you can't go by flopping around with a bad leg alone. You would need a history. Have you had any new chickens in the past month or two? How did you acquire your chickens? How long have you had them? If it is Marek's , there would have to be some contact with a chicken that had it.

If it was botulism, they would not be eating and drinking.

Pray for deficiency.

checked their vitamin levels in their diet, in there supplement there are 50 IU per pound of vitamin E and 14 IU in their feed, is this not enough vitamin E or is it too much?
i also checked thiamin levels too there isnt any in their feed i dont think or at least its not on the label and there is about 5 mg per pound in their supplement of thiamin, once again is this not enough or is this too much?

ive been checking on them alot today pumpkin is about the same but honey is getting worse as the day goes on, whatever it is it seems to be working pretty fast on her although she is not quite at the point that pumpkin is at, poor girl can only take a few unbalanced clumsy steps and then she has to rest again but she doesnt have any trouble with standing for a little bit. any advice anyone?

thanks for your reply, they are eating and drinking just fine. ive had my chickens for about a year and a half now we got them at tractor supply companys chick days in the spring, we havent had any new chickens and these girls are our first ever flock, havent had any chickens on the property, havent taken them anywhere and as far as i can remember its been a really long time since i have seen another chicken that wasnt my own ( by a long time i mean a couple months) the only thing i would think that they could get mareks from is wild birds but i dont know if they carry it. im praying for a vitamin deficiancy too.

I am going through a Mareks scare right now and they do not have to come in contact with another chicken that has it...it can blow in on the wind from a neighboring farm or from a wild bird. I wish that it would have to be from another chicken. I haven't had new chickens in 4 months...now, I'm losing chickens and all signs/symptoms points to Mareks. If I knew then, what I know now, I would never have purchased any chicks that weren't vaccinated. I was told that for a small backyard chicken owner that it wasn't something that I had to worry about. Wrong. I am now losing my chickens one at a time and they all have different symptoms...yet all can be symptoms of Mareks. I'm still praying that the pathology report comes back with another cause but in my heart, I already know that it will not.

I have cried alot of tears already and I dont think its over for me. I have two seven week polish that dont look so hot. Of course these are the two I played on my bed with. Makes me want to j..ust give up. I feel real helpless
