Parking lot problem

I own a bed and breakfast, and have a huge parking lot...that tends to pool water and freezes in the winter...I MUST put something down on this very large lot to avoid guests slipping and falling...but my ducks LOVE to play in the water when it melts and walk on the blacktop...
I used to use Ash on it...cheap for me...large supply of it from my stove..but I heard it's caustic? What can I use for traction that helps my guests. But won't ha my chickens or ducks...that is affordable...

We use literal sand and dirt. Creates traction and we and our horses do fine on it.
