Hello,

I am writing to see if anyone in Parsippany is interested in helping me change the city ordinance in order to allow Parsippany residents to have chickens. My current understanding and after speaking with a representative of the zoning board, Parsippany residents are allowed to have both hens and roosters but must have 5 acres of land. There are very few properties in Parsippany that consist of 5 acres of land. So the ordinance ultimately prohibits most residents of having chickens.

I have never attempted to change a city ordinance or anything like that, so this will all be fairly new. But I truly believe that if I can work with fellow chicken lovers we can get this done!

I am also in parsippany and we would
Like to have chickens. We are on 0.95 acres. I feel that’s plenty of space for 2-3 chickens. What about putting this
Topic on Facebook parsippany page and we can see how many people have interest, set a time to meet and discuss and how to apply for a code change?

Hello, Any luck making progress on this. Am also interested in raising backyard hens (2 to 3) in Parsipanny. I support you...

I have been told I would have to go to town council and try to persuade them. It’s not something I could do alone. I am also hearing about chickens being snuck in during the virus. I guess you can get away with it until someone turns you in. We would need someone who knows how to present these kind of things to council, I wouldn’t know where to begin.

Hi All,

The ordinance should be changed. It is antiquated, based on a time where Parsippany was farmland. If you want to change this law, we can. Here is our in. Councilwoman Emily Peterson has a coop full of chickens and has for years. Her property is only 2.41 acres. Therefore in order for she herself to be in compliance with the laws of the town she serves, it may be advantageous for her to help change the law. I would be willing to help organize the efforts. I know each council member, it may be more difficult working with the appointed members of the zoning board, however, if we can present the benefits of personal coops we may be able to make a change.

Hi Nick, have you found anyone interested in helping? I would also like to have a few hens.

Looking for an update on this topic? We would like to help petition to change the ordinance. As suggested before lets start a Facebook page it will be much easier to talk freely as well as invite members! I'm willing to start one, but i know nothing about chickens yet or changing ordinances. I can say after watching the documentary Tomorrow that Urban Farming is greatly beneficial to our environment. Maybe that could be part of the sway. THis is for our children's future and sustainability by using locally grown foods.
