Parsippany, New Jersey

Wondering if any progress was made on this? Besides the council woman who is in violation of the town ordinances how about proposing the benefits of growing and sourcing food locally? I just finished watching the documentary Tomorrow and there's many benefits to our environment if we got our food from Urban farming and growing locally. The Grow it Green urban farm in Morristown has chickens also. So maybe that could be example of a township that is promoting local foods and using chickens in smaller space than 5 acres.

I've started a Facebook Group called Backyard Chickens - Parsippany. If some of us can join we can communicate better and attract more residents to the conversation.

Hi Montefield, I'm also in Parsippany. Did you start the Facebook page? I couldn't find it. I'm also very interested in having chickens in our town.

hey! i live in parsippany and i am very interested in having 2-3 hens. we used to have 2 hens till a neighbor turned us in when i was younger. i would love to help and have hens as well—i already have a huge garden and would love to have the manure for my compost piles, eggs, and the joy of having hens!

Do you have any friends or neighbors that may also be interested? I have been told we would need a group of like minded people to present to town. I’m in Lake Hiawatha on a small lot but still want to do this.

hi ,
I'm also in Lake Hiawatha on a smallish lot but I do have a garden and a deck. I don't really know anyone else that would like to do this other than the people that have replied to this thread. I think I may know some homeschooling families that may be interested, however they have yet to reply to me in regards to this.

So nice to meet a like minded person. I have asked several of my neighbors, and they don’t care if I have them but they don’t want them themselves. We would need someone who knows how to create a presentation for the council. I have no skills in this. I can however provide all care and keeping info. Like you, I don’t know who else to ask to start this. See if you get a response from the families that home school and let me know.

Hello,

I am writing to see if anyone in Parsippany is interested in helping me change the city ordinance in order to allow Parsippany residents to have chickens. My current understanding and after speaking with a representative of the zoning board, Parsippany residents are allowed to have both hens and roosters but must have 5 acres of land. There are very few properties in Parsippany that consist of 5 acres of land. So the ordinance ultimately prohibits most residents of having chickens.

I have never attempted to change a city ordinance or anything like that, so this will all be fairly new. But I truly believe that if I can work with fellow chicken lovers we can get this done!
Did you have any luck in parsippany? We are thinking of moving there.

Hello all.
I'd love to get half a dozen egg-laying hens, and so does one of my 4 neighbors.
Last I checked, the ordinance hasn't changed much (or at all) in the last few years.
If my calculations are correct, an average lot of let's say 1/3 of an acre ( 0.3) is approximately 13,000 sq. ft or 113 sq. ft by 113 sq. ft.
When you add up 100 ft from the front+ 15 ft from the back = that already puts it out of the reach for most of Parsippany residents, without even adding the house dimensions.
I'm not sure it is the correct ordinance, but I wasn't able to find anything else referring to poultry or fowl.
It sounds like this was intended for more of the commercial type of establishment, not a backyard chicken type. Perhaps on purpose. What is so frustrating is that some of the neighboring towns do allow up to 8 fowl on any lot. I understand limiting the number of hens, prohibiting roosters on small properties, but essentially prohibiting keeping 4-8 hens.... So frustrating. It's your property, but we're going to tell you what you can and cannot do.
I wish they would regulate the damned landscapers, I wake up to commercial lawnmowers before 8 am 3 days per week. How is clucking of a couple of hens louder or worse than that is beyond me :(
