Last week I was supervising free range with my ducks and chickens. I heard the warning call from my rooster and turned to grab my pellet gun. Three dogs one large one medium and a chihuahua were running for the birds. I shot at them twice hitting what I thought was the medium dog. They ran off and I learned later from the sheriff it was the chihuahua AND the medium dog. Told him WHY I shot them and he said OK and asked if I wanted to press charges. Nope tell them it was a warning shot and the only reason I did not use a bigger gun was because it was daylight and too many people. Dogs have not been seen since. They keep them chained up. Sheriff informed me I was well with in my rights to protect my livestock from stray animals any way I could.

Last night I was letting Allie my aussie/pit into the chicken run where she patrols and she stopped right outside my door and growled then took off. The dogs that had come in and killed my birds the first time were back. They were trying to eat their way through the chain link dog kennel. Allie nailed the one and flipped while I ran for the 22. By the time I came back she came running to me and I seen the other dogs high tailing it back home one on three legs. I drove by this morning and the one dog is sporting a nice pink cast. Apparently my gentle happy go lucky pibble mix broke its leg and pulled a number on it. She is normally dog, cat, and people friendly. Matter of fact she was playing with a stray that showed up this morning while I was outside feeding and watering the birds.

I am not sure how she figures out that dureing the day shes off duty and at night shes on. Maybe because she stays in the house dureing the day and is outside at night. I hate her being out there and am looking into a LGD for the birds. Winters here can be unpredictable and drop well into the teens and below. She has ALWAYS been a house dog until recently and I am not fond of leaving her out in the winter nights.

Just thought of something. The reason I could not do anything about them when they killed most of my flock the first time was because they people said they were not their dogs. The dog is now casted and has vet records somewhere in THEIR name. HA will be getting pics of said casted dog today.
