Last week I was supervising free range with my ducks and chickens. I heard the warning call from my rooster and turned to grab my pellet gun. Three dogs one large one medium and a chihuahua were running for the birds. I shot at them twice hitting what I thought was the medium dog. They ran off and I learned later from the sheriff it was the chihuahua AND the medium dog. Told him WHY I shot them and he said OK and asked if I wanted to press charges. Nope tell them it was a warning shot and the only reason I did not use a bigger gun was because it was daylight and too many people. Dogs have not been seen since. They keep them chained up. Sheriff informed me I was well with in my rights to protect my livestock from stray animals any way I could.
Last night I was letting Allie my aussie/pit into the chicken run where she patrols and she stopped right outside my door and growled then took off. The dogs that had come in and killed my birds the first time were back. They were trying to eat their way through the chain link dog kennel. Allie nailed the one and flipped while I ran for the 22. By the time I came back she came running to me and I seen the other dogs high tailing it back home one on three legs. I drove by this morning and the one dog is sporting a nice pink cast. Apparently my gentle happy go lucky pibble mix broke its leg and pulled a number on it. She is normally dog, cat, and people friendly. Matter of fact she was playing with a stray that showed up this morning while I was outside feeding and watering the birds.
